What is light bladder leakage?
What is light bladder incontinence?
Experiencing light bladder leakage (LBL) is incredibly common, especially for females! Women actually make up a staggering 80% of people who report living with incontinence. You probably guessed it - pregnancy and childbirth-are well known associated factors of LBL. However there are many other various conditions that can contribute to LBL, such as asthma, diabetes or even arthritis . LBL is often experienced as infrequent light urinary leaking that can occur while you're laughing, exercising or coughing (stress incontinence) or you may frequently feel an urgent need to urinate (urge incontinence).
You know that feeling when you seriously need to pee and rush to the loo to release a full bladder? Urge incontinence is similar, however the urge to pee occurs much more frequently and/or is sudden and is experienced when the bladder is only half full (feeling much fuller than it really is!). Urge incontinence is often described as an overactive bladder, which can result in light bladder leakage when the hunt for a toilet takes too long. Even though urge incontinence is very common, the primary causes are still not fully clear. However, it is linked to ageing and the symptoms can worsen when experiencing high stress, too much caffeine or when drinking alcohol .

Pelvic floor muscles can stretch and weaken during pregnancy and childbirth. These important muscles support the urethra, so when they become compromised, it causes the leaking of small amounts of urine during activities such as lifting, daily exercise, laughing and coughing - pretty much anything that puts pressure on your pelvic floor.
If you don’t experience LBL during or after pregnancy-that’s awesome! Although it’s good to know that it’s also common during menopause to experience stress incontinence. This is caused by the reduced production of oestrogen, which assists with maintaining the thickness of the urethra lining .
It’s also quite common for men to develop stress incontinence post prostate surgery.
